Primary Research Summary:
From these results, it is clear that younger people tend to have more social media apps than older people do. Also I learnt that older people can go without social media for a lot longer than younger people. The differences and similarities from this questionnaire are mostly age based rather than gender based which shows that different age groups use and see social media differently.
SECONDARY RESEARCH:
Positive Social Media Story:
A photo of a boy who was reading a book to a cat went viral on Reddit in early February 2014. This photo raised awareness about the 'Book Buddies' program that took place at the Animal Rescue League of Berks County where children would read books out loud to cats to practice reading in a cat shelter in Pennsylvania.
This story shows that there are positive sides to social media since the story created awareness for a good cause.
Negative Social Media Story:
After the death of Robin Gibb, the co-founder of the Bee Gees, the company MSN created a post about the death and asked people to like the post to 'pay respects' to the artist. People were outraged about this post as it was too soon after the death and it was seen as using the musicians death to gain lots of likes for their post. This was also seen as disrespectful because the post was only asking for likes and didn't say anything to consider the death.
This story shows that people and companies will sometimes go to certain lengths to use something for likes or anything to get their post to high popularity even if it's about a bad cause or event.
Holistic Study:
In this study, it says that 73% of American adults use YouTube and 68% use Facebook as of 2018. In another study, it shows that 78% of people that use Snapchat are aged 18-24 and 71% of people use Instagram of that age as well. It also shows that 56% of YouTube's users are 50 years old or above. These studies show that there are rough age groups that use different social medias, it is evident from these studies that middle aged adults and older people tend to use Facebook and YouTube more than other social medias. These studies also shows that younger people like teenagers and young adults tend to use Instagram and Snapchat more often than older people do.
CONCLUSION:
From this research it shows that people mostly have negative effects from social media use. There doesn't seem to be any specific age groups that have different effects, I think it just depends on how people use social media and what social media websites they use. But from my research I have found out that Instagram and Snapchat's users are mostly teenagers and young adults whereas social media apps like Facebook and Whatsapp and even YouTube are used by adults of an older age more often than Instagram or Snapchat. I think this is because Facebook, for example, has a more formal and mature format so it appeals to older adults more whereas Snapchat, for example, is more teenager-friendly with its layout and purpose in general.
